WATERLOO -- James Fowler Howrey, 70, of Kiawah Island, S.C., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Waterloo, son of Julia Fowler and Benjamin G. Howrey. He married Ellen Kaupke Nov. 14, 1959, and they were later divorced.

A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Howrey worked for the Waterloo Paper Co. before moving to Cedar Rapids, where he was employed at Cedar Rapids Galvanizing Co. and later became owner. He also farmed and operated Howrey Transportation, and in 1985 moved to Upperville, Va., where he served as a business manager for 11 years, retiring in 1996.

Survived by: two daughters, Elizabeth Lederer of Cedar Rapids and Melissa Holman of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren; and his former wife, Ellen Howrey of Cedar Rapids.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, with private burial in Waterloo. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials: may be directed to the University of Iowa Scholarship Fund.
