[Waterloo Courier, Monday, February 1, 2010]

“Baby Sam,” the 10-week-old beautiful and courageous infant son of Kurt and Joy Owens, went to sleep in the loving arms of his Dad and Mom, and awoke in the safe embrace of his Heavenly Father on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Mayo Clinic’s Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Samuel was born feet first Nov. 18, 2009, at 7:20 p.m. in Rochester. He weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 19 inches long. He was perfectly formed in every way except for a very special tiny heart. He was born with a severe congenital heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

For a short time he leaves behind his family who loves him more than there are words to describe.

They include his Dad and Mom, Kurt and Joy (Swanson) Owens of Waterloo; Big Brother, Parker; Big Brother, Matthew, and Big Sister, Emma Grace; Great-Grandmothers, Dorothy Petersen of Waterloo and Rose Swanson of Traer; Grandparents, Gene and Lisa Swanson of Waterloo and David and Debra Owens of Des Moines; Aunt, Stephanie Swanson of Juneau, Alaska; Aunt and Uncle, Scott and Julie Reger of Waterloo; and Big Cousins, Addisyn and Taylor; his extended family and thousands of friends, medical staff, and people we have never even met who prayed for, cared for and loved him like he was their own.

We rejoice knowing our sweet Sam is in Heaven free from pain, but sorrow for ourselves and the hurt that we feel from losing such an amazing little life. We thank God for giving us the miracle of Samuel’s life, even for the short time he was with us. He was the greatest of blessings, impacted many, and will be always be remembered by us all.

We love you our sweet, sweet precious little boy.

Baby Sam’s funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church, with burial in Orange Township Cemetery. Visitation for an hour and a half before the service at the church.

A memorial fund in Samuel’s honor and memory is being established for his family.
