GILBERTVILLE - LeRoy "Lee" Hess, 89, of Ridgeway Place, Waterloo, formerly of Gilbertville, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at ManorCare Health Services, Waterloo.

He was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Brandon, son of Henry and Kathryn Kettman Hess. He married Margaret Delagardelle on Sept. 19, 1945, in Gilbertville.

Mr. Hess graduated from Jesup High School, Jesup, then attended welding school. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was vice president of Youngblut Construction, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Mary (Stephen) Merkel-Hess of Iowa City and Barbara (Richard) Anfinson of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Kathryn (Bryan) McDonald, Matthias (Christina Vizcarra) Merkel-Hess and Nicole (Jeremy) Howe; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary Howe; a sister, Almira Weisert of Nora Springs; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hess of Minneapolis.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Virgil (Leafy) and Roger; and a brother-in-law, Harold Weisert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Full military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth Post 714 of Gilbertville. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Monday at the church.
