CEDAR FALLS - Allen P. "Al" Shinstine, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Jan. 15, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born June 8, 1935, in Boyd, son of Paul A. and Alveda Pitz Shinstine. He married Mary K. Boehmer on Sept. 2, 1958, in Charles City.

Mr. Shinstine was a 1953 graduate of New Hampton High School, attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from the Business Institute of Technology, Cedar Falls. He served in the U.S. Army and was an accountant at Clay Equipment Co. and Roberts Home Decorating, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and was a fourth-degree knight with the St. Patrick Knights of Columbus.

He was founder and honorary board member of the Knights of Columbus National Softball Tournament and founder of the Knights of Columbus State Spelling Bee, Basketball Free Throw Tournament and State Softball Tournament. He was past president of Mended Hearts and past district deputy of the Knights of Columbus.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Colleen Shinstine of Des Moines, Virginia "Gin" Garbes of Cedar Falls and Kathleen "Kathy" Burnell of Waterloo; four sons, Gregory "Greg" (Kathryn) and Richard "Rick," both of Waterloo, Paul of Paola, Kan., and William "Bill" (Felita) of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his mother and father-in-law; and his special pet beagle, Marty.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with a 6:30 p.m. vigil service and a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Sartori Memorial Hospital, the University of Iowa ICU or renal transplant departments.
