Death Calls Old Settler

Patrick Murphy, a resident of Black Hawk county for the past sixteen years and of Waterloo for four years past, died at his home 425 State street, at 7:45 this morning, of cirrhosis of the liver, after an illness of about four months, aged 74 years.

Deceased was born in County Mayo, Ireland, March 17, 1832. He came to America in 1851 and settled in Iowa in 1853, locating first at Clinton, where he conducted a general store for a number of years. He was married in 1862 to Ann Costello. Three children were born to the couple, all of whom survive. They are: John and Peter Murphy of Voorhies, and Mrs. William Reed of Dougherty. His wife died a number of years ago and he was married a second time to Elizabeth Walton. Six children were born to them, five of whom survive, as follows: W. J. Murphy, Portland, Oregon; Patrick Murphy, Waterloo; Mrs. F. L. Fisher, Agnes and Genevieve all of this city.

After leaving Clinton Mr. Murphy conducted a general store at Charlotte, Clinton county. Disposing of his business he moved to Lincoln township in 1880, where he engaged in farming up to about four years ago when he moved to Waterloo and retired from active work.

Deceased was a member of the Catholic church from childhood, and during his residence in this county had been a member of St. Joseph's church in this city, being an active worker and faithful worshipper at this church.

At the time of his death his brother, Thomas F. Murphy, was at his bedside. Another brother, Peter Murphy is expected to arrive this evening and Mrs. T. F. Murphy is also expected to be present at the funeral as well as the surviving children. A son, Wm. J. Murphy of Portland, Ore., was here last week but was compelled to return home.

The funeral services will be held from St. Joseph's church, Saturday morning at 9:30, and interment will be in the Catholic cemetery.
