WATERLOO - John M. Penning, 57, of Dubuque, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 15, at his home.

He was born March 29, 1952, in Waterloo, son of Kenneth and Rosemary Wanchura Penning. He married Kathy Iiams on Sept. 13, 1975, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo.

He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 and received his master's degree from Loras College in 1981. He was employed in the Dubuque Community School System at Hempstead High School for 33 years as a mathematics teacher and coach.

He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church.

Survived by: his wife; two sons, Michael (Sara) of Waterloo and Matthew of Dubuque; his mother, Rosemary Penning of Waterloo; two brothers, Paul (Bobbie) of Evansdale and David of Council Bluffs; and two sisters, Jean (Wayne) Johnson of Waterloo and Mary (Robert) Campbell of Cedar Rapids.

Preceded in death by: his father.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Asbury. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. wake service. Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial fund: has been established.
