WATERLOO - James P. Smith, 92, of Waterloo, formerly of Compton, Calif., died at home Friday, Jan. 8, of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 19, 1917, in Wewoka, Okla., son of John W. and Emily Saling Smith. He married Lucy Liggins, and she preceded him in death.

He graduated from Wewoka High School and attended Langston University, Tulsa, Okla.

Mr. Smith was a longshoreman for Pacific Maritime, retiring in 1979. He served with the 187th Engineer Aviation Battalion in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survived by: three sons, James (Beverly) and John, both of Waterloo, and Kenny of Compton; a daughter, Velma Siler of Imperial, Calif.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a son, Gary; a stepson, Clyde Robinson; two sisters, Annie Davis and Alma Dennis; and two brothers, Gilbert and A.Z.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Inglewood Park Chapel, with burial in Inglewood Park Cemetery, both in Inglewood, Calif. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
