WATERLOO - Alex E. Walker, 71, of 237 Prospect Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 5, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of natural causes.

He was born Feb. 12, 1938, in Iowa City, son of Alex Walker and Cecil Wilson. He married Ruth Carter on May 6, 1961.

Mr. Walker was formerly employed by Job Service of Iowa and the Upward Bound program. He received bachelor’s degrees in black history and world history and his master’s degree in world religion, all from the University of Northern Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army and was a deacon at Corinthian Baptist Church.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Derrick of Houston, Brett (Florida) of Phillips Ranch, Calif., and Micah of Waterloo; two daughters, Maria Walker of Waterloo and Deedra Walker of Chicago; a sister, Odessa Jointer of Chicago; a nephew, Kris (Coreen) Walker of St. Paul, Minn.; and 12 grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a brother, Eugene; and a sister, Delna "Prudy" Walker.

Services: were 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Antioch Baptist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted at the church by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Sanders Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to the family at 237 Prospect Ave., where they will receive friends.

He also is survived by other relatives and friends who will mourn his departure.
