Michael D. Atkins, 68, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Allen Hospital.

Mike shared his love and family with his former wives, Judith Gillespie and Vicki Atkins, as well as, with his children, Tony (Lori) Atkins, Eric Atkins, Michelle Williams, Kim Krizek and Chris (Katie) Krizek who survive him. He also loved and is survived by his sister, Kris (Joel) Johnson; brothers, Tim (Terri) Atkins, Curt (Leann) and Mark (Tammi) Atkins; and 11 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, Hubert Atkins; his mother, Jane Eaton; and sister, Susan Boyle.

He worked tirelessly for the rights of all workers through his involvement with United Auto Workers Local 838.

Mike especially loved his pet dogs, Charlie, Scooch and Indie. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing on Lake of the Woods in Canada, and boating with his friends at Lake Ponderosa. He also was a strong supporter and fan of the UNI Panthers basketball team.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be for an hour before services at the church on Monday. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's memory to the Cedar Bend Humane Society or the Cedar Valley Hospice program.
