WATERLOO - Philip D. Houston, 59, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born July 4, 1950, in Sedalia, Mo., son of Samuel Jr. and Sallie President Houston. He married Brenda Dianne Harrington; they later divorced. He later joined with Alisa Thomas.

Mr. Houston graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1967 and then from Purdue University. He was an accomplished master plumber for the Black Hawk Labor Temple.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Viet Nam receiving an honorable discharge.

He was a member of Payne AME Memorial Church, Waterloo American Legion and Black Hawk Labor Union.

Survived by: daughter Linchelle Houston, Waterloo; son Philip D. Houston, Des Moines; son Mikel D. (Brenda) Houston, Des Moines; daughter Bernice Houston, Des Moines; life partner Alisa Thomas, Waterloo; son Thomas D. (Audrey) Young, Waterloo; son Nathaniel (Kami) Cunningham, Waterloo; son Bruce Thomas, Independence; son Jerome Thomas, Waterloo; his mother, Sallie (Edward) Johnson, Waterloo; brother Roderick (Theodesia) Houston, Waterloo; brother Raymond Johnson, Los Angeles, CA; sister Anita Clark, Waterloo; brother Antonio Johnson, Mason City; and his maternal grandmother, Alberta President, Sedalia, Mo.

Preceded in death by: his father; a sister, Linda Harrington; his grandfather, Herman President; and paternal grandparents, Samuel and Lillius Houston Sr.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with military rites by VFW Post #1623 and American Legion Post #138. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
