[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, December 6, 2009]

Anne (Zegarac) Penly, 88, formerly of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2009, at Jones Harrison Residence, Minneapolis, where she has lived since April 2004.

Anne was born to Mary and Joseph Zegarac in Waterloo on Dec. 3, 1920. She graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1939. She was married on April 5, 1941, in Waterloo to Gilbert Penly, who preceded her in death in 2004. They resided in Dubuque from 1947 until 2004.

Anne was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed participating with her many life-long friends in her golf league at Bunker Hill Golf Course, bowling league at Fisher Lanes, and her bridge club. She was active for many years in PTA and Grandview Avenue Methodist Church. Known for her hospitality and baking, she loved sharing her home with visitors and providing treats to her friends, neighbors and family. Her homemade breads were always welcome at church bazaars and by the many nursing home residents she visited faithfully.

She is survived by daughters, Judith Penly-Russell (Tim Russell) of Minneapolis and Mary Jeanne Penly (Warren Anderson) of Shorewood, Minn.; her grandsons, Nicholas Anderson of Shorewood, and Peter Anderson of New York; her sister, Katherine (Zegarac) Lichty of Waterloo; her in-laws, William and Elaine Penly of Sherman, Texas; and many nieces and nephews - all of whom will miss her loving and generous spirit.

Anne was also preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph Zegarac; her brothers, Mike, Nick, Dan, Ralph and Steve Zegarac; and sister, Mary Zegarac Saltzman.

Private family interment will be at Garden of Memories, Waterloo.

Anne's family would like to thank the staff of Cedar Bay at Jones Harrison for their loving and devoted care of Anne for the past five years.

Memorials in memory of Anne may be sent to JoAnne Buytendorp, Director, Jones Harrison Residence, 3700 Cedar Lake Road, Minneapolis, MN 55416 for the Cedar Bay Employee Fund.
