WATERLOO - James A. Raecker, 74, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Nov. 29, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of melanoma cancer.

He was born Dec. 3, 1934, in Waterloo, son of Arlyss and Esther Schmidt Raecker. He married Thieleane Brink Stevens on June 12, 1958, in Waterloo.

Dr. Raecker graduated from West High School in 1952, University of Iowa undergraduate degree in 1955 and the College of Dentistry in 1959. He began dental practice with his father in 1959 and was a founding member of Waterloo Dental Associates, retiring in 2004.

He was a past member and vice chairman of the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners, American Association of Dental Examiners, member and on board of directors of Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) and American Dental Association. He was a member Iowa Dental Association (IDA) and past member of House of Delegates, past Chairman of the Ethics, Intraprofessional and Public Relations Committee, and past Chairman Insurance Council of the IDA. A member and officer of the Waterloo District Dental Association, Black Hawk Dental Study Club. A member of Waterloo Rotary Club, Elks Club of Waterloo and past board member of American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. Jim received the University of Iowa College of Dentistry Distinguished Dental Service Award in 2009

Survivors include his wife, Thieleane Raecker of Waterloo; two sons, Steven (Marijo) Raecker of Waterloo and J. Scott (Martha) Raecker of Urbandale; a daughter, Jennie (Mike) Murphy of Decorah; grandchildren, Jake Raecker of Waterloo, Emily and Max Raecker, both of Urbandale, and Patrick, Mary, Andy and Jane Murphy, all of Decorah; a sister, Sue Schrader of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Maryann (John) Locke of Waterloo; and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Thomas Murphy.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the James A. Raecker Dental Service Award at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. In lieu of flowers, Jim requests you plant some tulips, feed some birds, and split and give away some hostas in his honor.
