Dorothy "Dottie" Hagenstein, longtime resident of Waterloo, recently of Phoenix, passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.

Dottie was a familiar face at the Black Hawk County Clerk of Courts Office, where she spent most of her 28 years there as First Deputy.

She was born Dorothy Jean Snyder on Nov. 11, 1921, in Blairsburg. She attended Waterloo East High School and worked various jobs in Waterloo until World War II, when she and her sister Marjorie joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAACS).

Dorothy married Henry Hagenstein in 1944. The couple had two children, VoegeEtte Koltz of Encinitas, Calif., and Tony Hagenstein of Phoenix.

She moved in the 1990s from Waterloo to Phoenix to be close to family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by Henry and her sister Marjorie and is survived by her other two sisters, Francies Zegarac of Mesa and Betty Lynn of Sugarland, Texas, and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy’s family has asked that she be remembered with donations to the Phoenix Hospice of the Valley.
