Waterloo Boy Dies Of Hurts Had In Battle

Leslie J. Bruce's End Comes Almost on Anniversary of His Entering Regular Army

Leslie J. Bruce, age 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli S. Bruce, 1013 Columbia street, died May 1 of wounds received in battle, a telegram received Saturday informed the parents.

His death came practically one year from his enlistment. He entered the regular army in this city May 8, 1917, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, going from there to El Paso and arriving in France Jun 26. He was a member of Co. E, Fifteenth infantry.

Private Bruce would have been 21 years old had he lived until Aug. 16, 1918. He was born in Marshall county and lived there until the family came to Waterloo three years ago. He was employed at the Litchfield factory before he enlisted. Surviving are the parents, three sisters, Hazel, Edna and Elizabeth, and a brother, Eli.

Telegrams Received Simultaneously Monday Announcing Tragic News to Parents.

Bruce Died In Hospital

Mr. and Mrs. Eli S. Bruce, 1013 Columbia street, received a telegram Monday morning from the government stating that their son, Leslie J. Bruce, age 20, died May 1 of wounds received in battle. He died in a base hospital back of the firing line.

Bruce entered the regular army in Waterloo May 3, 1917, leaving here for Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He left from there for El Paso, Texas and shortly afterwards for France, arriving there June 26.

The youth was born in Marshall county August 16, 1897 and lived there until his parents moved to this city three years ago. He was employed at the Litchfield Manufacturing company up to the time he enlisted.

The flags at this plant were at half mast Monday and will remain at half mast today in honor of the local hero. Surviving are his parents, three sisters, Hazel, Edna and Elizabeth Bruce and a brother, Lloyd Bruce.
