WATERLOO - Dale E. Sommerlot, 78, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 25, at Grundy Care Center.

He was born June 30, 1931, in Albion, son of Merl and Margaret Harper Sommerlot. He married E. Ruth Manz on Aug. 12, 1951, at Chapel Church in Green Mountain.

Mr. Sommerlot served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He also attended Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis and Iowa State University. He was employed at the John Deere Product Engineering Center for 30 years, was part of the KNWS Christian Radio and was director of the Cedar Falls Bible Conference for a short time.

Survived by: his wife; two sons; Delvin (Renee) and Kent (Christena), both of Dunkerton; three daughters, Maureen (Glen) Wiley of Marshalltown, Mel (Darwin) Engelkes of Holland and Michelle (Joe) Campbell of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Ramona) of Union and Leon (Sharon) of Marshalltown; a brother-in-law, Maurice (Darlene) Manz of Marshalltown; and a sister-in-law, Mavis Sommerlot of Denver.

Preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers, Robert, Max, Wilfred "Bill" and Keith; a great-grandson, Emmett Hansen; and two sisters-in-law, JoAnne Sommerlot and Jimmy Sommerlot.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Greenhill Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and an hour before services Thursday at the church.
