[Waterloo Courier, Tuesday, October 27, 2009]

Phyllis Kittle, 75 years young, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Oct. 25, 2009, at her son's home in Iowa City after a long battle with cancer. She had successfully fought the disease for over 8 years before succumbing.

A memorial and celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at St Timothy's United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls. The Rev. Dick Clark and the Rev. Bruce Kittle will officiate.

Phyllis was born in Three Rivers, Mich., the daughter of Lyle and Lena Mae Miller, on July 23, 1934. She graduated from Constantine (Mich.) high school in 1952. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.

On Aug. 9, 1952, Phyllis was united in marriage to Carl Kittle of Hayes Center, Neb. After completing their studies at the University of Nebraska, the couple moved to Cedar Falls in June 1955. Carl and Phyllis had two children, Vienna (Bowling) and Bruce Kittle.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, her daughter, Vienna (and Terry) Bowling of Branson, Mo., and her son, the Rev. Bruce Kittle (and Jan Krieger) of Iowa City. There are two grandchildren, Emma and George Kittle of Iowa City. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley (and Jack) Oberle of Worthington, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Ellen McNeal of Tucson, Ariz.

Phyllis was an uncompromising hostess, caring for her family and friends with home-cooked meals and desserts of all kinds. She loved to feed those who were hungry, and for years worked the kitchen at the UM Camp grounds in Cedar Falls in the summers. She also cooked for the church's Wednesday night youth group for many years.

She always had a wandering spirit and loved to travel. Of particular interest were the Colorado Rockies and any or all of the National Parks. She also loved warm weather and the ocean, so when it came to winters in Iowa she was grateful to be able to spend time at their condo at the Island House on North Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. She loved to walk the beach looking for shells and particularly sand dollars.

The family asks that all gifts and memorial money be donated to the American Cancer Society. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her family and friends!
