[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, October 18, 2009]

CEDAR FALLS - Marvin E. Haugebak, 90, of Cedar Falls, died at home on Friday, October 16th, of Parkinson's disease.

He was born September 9th, 1919, on a farm near Joice, Iowa, son of Anton and Florence (Otto) Haugebak. Marvin received his BS and MS Degrees from Iowa State University and was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. During WWII Marvin served four years as a Lieutenant the Naval Air Force. On June 1, 1944, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Carver at Ames, Iowa.

Marvin enjoyed a variety of careers. Rath Packing hired Marvin as Agronomist, which brought them to Waterloo. Marvin later became Co-Owner of Hogan-Haugebak Anhydrous Ammonia Company in Hudson before farmers were even aware of what it was. Traveling for American Cyanamid was his next venture. Shortly after that, he opened a Soil Testing Lab downtown Cedar Falls. Marvin was a Realtor in the Cedar Valley for over 50 years. He received the "Distinguished Realtor Award for exemplifying outstanding characteristics of a Professional Realtor in 1996". All along he enjoyed farming also.

Marvin was a Boy Scout/Cub Scout Leader, member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Rotary Club, American Legion, Beaver Hills and Co-Founder of Sons of Norway Solglimt Lodge.

Anyone that knew Marvin was aware of his political affiliation. He was a very proud stanch Democrat. He played an active part in the party for many years. He ran for State Senator and Mayor of Cedar Falls. He was Soil Conservation Commissioner for many years.

Besides politics, his main passions were golf, bridge, and social activities with Dottie. If there was a play, symphony, or fund-raiser in the Cedar Valley Marvin & Dottie were usually there. He always enjoyed the family dinners (especially chocolate desserts) and the annual family vacation in Minnesota.

He had a terrific sense of humor & his laugh will be missed by all.
