THURM, SCHADE, SASSMANN, HAPPEL, VALVERDE, LAIL

DENVER - Elmer Herbert Thurm, 92, of Denver, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Denver Sunset Home.

He was born April 15, 1917, in Altenburg, Mo., son of Paul and Rosa Schade Thurm. He married Esther Sassmann on Feb. 6, 1944, at St. John Lutheran Church, Crane Creek. She died Oct. 15, 2008.

Mr. Thurm worked as a farm hand in rural Janesville, then as a carpenter in Evansdale. He went to work at Rath Packing Co. as a meat inspector in 1949, retiring in 1979. He also was a woodworker and built numerous grandfather clocks, various furniture pieces and restored antique furniture. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, where he served as trustee and sat on the cemetery board.

Survived by: three sons, Paul (Janice) of Waverly, Dennis (Mary) of Denver and Jim (Phyllis) of Rapid City, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Darren (Andrea) Thurm, Adam Thurm, Kevin Thurm, Nichole (Rene) Valverde, Jason (Amy Brown) Thurm, Jennifer (Christopher) James, Nathan (Maria) Lail and Jocelyn Lail; four great-grandchildren, Nicolas Valverde, Shelby Thurm, Arianna Valverde and Logan Thurm; a sister, Renetta Thurm; and a sister-in-law, Lorena Thurm.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Elaine Happel; and two brothers, Raymond and Lorraine.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, with burial in the church cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Denver Sunset Home or the church.
