WATERLOO - Lewis Carpenter, 90, of Waterloo, died Monday, Oct. 5, at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, of natural causes.

He was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Waterloo, son of Bill and Lotty Bebe Carpenter. He married Esther Jane George on July 9, 1946, in Kansas City. She died April 15, 2005.

Mr. Carpenter was the head custodian at Irving School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart.

Survived by: a son, Robert (Polly) Graves Jr. of Atkins; two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Gillen of Osage and Bernice (Robert) Knoke of Belle Plaine; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Rorke of Fort Dodge and Virginia (Tom) Grosclose of Idaho.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a daughter, Linda Reed; a grandson, Caleb Fitzpatrick; seven brothers; and five sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary and 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Friday at the church.
