Hudson Boy Killed Coasting as Sled Slides Into Path of Auto and Ice Prevents Its Stopping

Robert Furneaux, Nine, Dies of Skull and Internal Injuries

HUDSON, Ia. (Special) A coasting accident Monday afternoon cost the life of Robert Furneaux, nine.

The boy's sled swung across the highway one block east of the home of Rev. H.V. Riggs, pastor of the United Brethren church, and was crushed under the wheels of an automobile driven by Allen Peterson, Zaneta, an employee of the John Deere tractor plant, Waterloo.

Skull and internal injuries caused the child's death, which occurred while the boy was being taken to a hospital in Waterloo, from the office of a Hudson physician.

Driver is Exonerated
V.C. Beatty, Hudson, who was riding with Peterson, drove to Waterloo with the boy.

Coroner Eugene Smith said Monday night after a preliminary investigation that there was no evidence of negligence on the part of Peterson.

Witnesses said the car was moving slowly, but could not be stopped in the brief warning period the driver had, because of the icy conditions of the street. The accident happened at 5:15 p.m.

Parents, Grandparents Survive
Robert was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Furneaux, Hudson and was born in Hudson April 18, 1927.

Survivors are the parents, and three grandparents; Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Furneaux, Stuttgart, Ark., and Mrs. J.C. Knudsen, 205 Williston ave., Waterloo.

The body was taken to Kearns Garden chapel, Waterloo.
