Funeral Services of George Gallarno
Editor Plain Talk, Held Monday

George Gallarno, 83, editor of Plain Talk for the past 15 years, passed away at his apartment, 2901 Ingersoll Avenue, Saturday evening. He had been in ill health of some time and confined to his home the past month. Up until the middle of May he had kept up his writing, and upon his birthday, May 20th, he wrote an article, "Eighty-three and Feeling; and How," in which he recalled the contrast between that day and three years before when he wrote "Reaching Eight and Felling Fifty."

He spoke of the truth of the oft-repeated statement that we cannot hold back the ravages of old age, and seemed to fully realize that his span of life had been almost completed.

Mr. Gallarno was born at La Porte City, Iowa, and his father died in the Civil War while George was but a small boy. Being left an orphan he spent several years in the soldiers' orphans home, now the state normal school at Cedar Falls. He started his newspaper with old La Porte City Progress, where he learned the printer's trade. He was connect with several newspapers for some time and later came to Des Moines where he was employed as chief clerk in the municipal department of the state auditor's office. He returned to his old love of newspaper work as editor of Plain Talk 15 years ago, a position he held until his death.

Mr. Gallarno was an ardent golfer, and while a member of the Grand View Golf Club, a number years ago and the misfortune to lose one of his eyes, being struck by a golf ball. In spite of this handicap he continued to enjoy the game until recent years.

He had a wide acquaintance among the newspaper publishers and public me of the state. His editorials were widely copied by county seat and other papers throughout Iowa. He was a republican, a member of the Unitarian church and the East Des Moines club.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles cook, and a granddaughter, Nancy Cook, both of Wausau, Wis.

Services were held at Dunn's funeral home at 2:00 Monday, C. N. Bigelow conducting the services.

George Gallarno

George Gallarno, 83, widely known editor of Plain Talk, Des Moines weekly newspaper who died suddenly Saturday, received his early education at the Soldier’s Orphans Home here, the institution that later became Iowa State Teachers College.

Over fifty years ago he joined with J. G. Packard in publishing the Cedar Falls Globe, a weekly newspaper according to Roger Leavitt.

For about 30 years he was chief clerk in the municipal department in the state auditor's office, but returned to the newspaper field some 15 years ago when he became editor of Plain Talk.
