Margaret Emma Childs
DUNKERTON - Margaret Emma Childs, 85, rural Dunkerton, died Sunday morning, July 6,1997, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, following a fall at her home on July 3.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bennington, rural Waterloo. The Rev. A. Dean Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, and for an hour before the service Wednesday at the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Gerald 0.) Robinson, Waterloo; a son, Donald B. Childs, Dunkerton; three grandchildren; and a brother, Russell (Bill) Westphaf, Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce; a granddaughter, Gina Marie Childs; an infant sister; and a brother, Louis Westphal.
She was born May 17, 1912 in rural Bremer County, the daughter of Ludwig and Amanda Pauline Fratzke Westphal. She graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1929 and attended Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) where she received her two-year teaching certificate. She taught in several country schools.
She married Bruce John Childs of Dunkerton, Aug. 13, 1934. They made their home north of Dunkerton where they operated the Black Hawk Minkery farm from 1940 until 1964, and also farmed. They retired from farming in 1973. Mrs. Childs continued to live on the farm after Mr. Childs died in 1977.
She was active in St. John's Lutheran Church where she was a member of WELCA and Faith Circle.
