Cortes H. Wellman, Walnut Court apartments, retired business man and banker, died at 5:10 a.m. Sunday at Presbyterian hospital of pneumonia after a 12-week illness. He was 80 years old.

Well-known in northeast Iowa, Mr. Wellman had once been a banker at Flandreau, S. D., and at Sioux City, Ia., and had been engaged in the realty business. During the past 15 years since moving back to Waterloo from California he had taken care of his many business interests.

Moved Here in 1863

Cortes H. Wellman, born Sept. 2, 1858, in Vermont, was the son of Chellis S. and Emily Wellman. In 1863 the family moved out to Waterloo, where they lived while Cortes obtained part of his schooling. Later they moved to Bremer county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

Mr. Wellman married Miss Laura Valentine in December, 1886, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple moved to Flandreau, S. D., later to Sioux City and then to California where they remained until about 15 years ago.

Mrs. Wellman died Jan. 21, 1928, in Waterloo. Mr. Wellman belonged to First Presbyterian church here and was a member of the Masonic organization at Flandreau, S. D.

Sister, Brothers Survive

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. O. W. Lee, Colman, S. D.; three brothers, Charles, Colman; William, Anaheim, Cal., and Edwin, Keystone, S. D.

Mrs. Lee and a nephew, Frank Wellman of Omaha, Neb., were with him the past few weeks during Mr. Wellman's illness.

Another sister, Mrs. Arthur Whaley, died at Flandreau, and a brother, L. E. Wellman, died at Schuyler, Neb.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kistner funeral home with Dr. H. E. Dierenfield, pastor of First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.

Active casket bearers will be Orlo C. Miller, Frank Sloan, Fred W. Elder, Glenn Hinson, Corwin Hinson, W. H. Kurtt, M. F. Coontz and Charles Besh.
