Well-Known Local Resident Dies After Long Illness.
Leon Byron Skiles, 69 years old, died at his home on Commercial Street, Monday, November 18, at 6:30 A.M. He was afflicted with a stroke on September 28th, with others following and gradually failed till the end came. He was the son of James S. and Elizabeth Steve Skiles, born in Troy Grove, Ill., on Sept. 14, 1877. He grew to manhood on the farm with his parents and was married to Nettie C. Kaiser of La Porte City, in Mt. Auburn on Feb. 25, 1903. They returned to Illinois, where they farmed for three years, then coming back to the Fairview vicinity, they farmed there, near Garrison, Vinton, in Minnesota and South Dakota before locating near Mt. Auburn. They retired six years ago in La Porte City where he made his home since.
He is survived by his wife, and one son, James, near Dysart, and three grandchildren. Also two brothers are living, William Vernon Skiles of Atlanta, Ga., and James Roy Skiles of Evanston, Ill, and one sister, Mrs. Ila Viola Yenrick of Pawpaw, Ill. One son, Leon Bryon Jr. and one daughter, Elva may, seven sistrers and three infant brothers, along with his parents, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Johannsen funeral home on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock with Reverend C.O. Jensen of the Methodist Church officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Burr sang selections, accompanied by Mrs. C.A. Brust. Six brothers-in-law acted as casketbearers, G.E. Loveless, Roy Brown, Tom Elliott, James Hill, Henry Mahood and Ray Runyan.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.
