Anthony M. "Tony" Behounek, 59, of Vinton, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton due to a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Mark C. Urlaub officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, with military rites by George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57.
Tony was born April 25, 1949, in Chelsea, Iowa, the son of Louis and Emma Kubik Behounek. He attended St. Joseph's in Chelsea and was a graduate of South Tama High School and Kirkwood Community College.
Tony proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1967 until 1971. He was a member of Vinton's George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57.
On Nov. 4, 1989, Tony was united in marriage with Jackie Grimm at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie, of Vinton; one son, Garrett Smith of Vinton; two daughters, Jessica (Tom) Gibson of Brooklyn and Angie (Evan) Shanley of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Nicole Tuttle and Bailey, Katie and Lilly Gibson; five brothers, John (Ida) of Cedar Rapids, Francis (Jean) of Chelsea, Bernard (Jackie) of Altoona, Wis., Damien (Bernita) of Littleton, Colo., and Michael (Penny) of Chelsea; three sisters, Rita (Larry) Sevcik of Toledo, Catherine (Jack) Wilkinson of Chelsea and Mary (Joel) Willaby of Chelsea; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Barbara Banes; niece, Charlotte Wilkinson; nephew, Randy Sevcik; and his father-in-law, Dean Grimm.
A memorial fund has been established.
