Obituary

--------

Mrs. Eliza Jane Hodges-Scharff
was born at Indianapolis, Ind., Aug.
21, 1840. She died at her home in
south Exira township, October 6,
1900. She was married to Michael
Scharff, March 21, 1864, at Lewis,
Iowa. Immediately thereafter they
removed to Audubon county, Iowa
where they have continued to reside
until her death. The funeral services
occurred October 7th at the farm
home at 2 p. m., Rev. E. H. Votaw
officiating. The bereaved husband
was too sick to leave his bed and ap-
pear in the last sad rites of his be
loved companion. She was a converted
and united with the Baptist church
at the age of eighteen years. Nine
children were born to them, five sons
and four daughters, two of whom had
preceded their mother into the silent
land. The children were faithful in
paying their respects to (t)heir mother's
memory witnessing to their love for
her. The high esteem in which the
family are held was attested by the
large concourse of friends at the fun-
eral, many of whom were from Exira,
Brayton and Atlantic.

Charley Scharff arrived here last
Saturday from Denver, Colorado, on
the sad mission of attending his
mother's funeral. He will return to
his western home in a few days.

A Mother Gone

--------

Mrs. Michael Scharff passed away,
at their home near Brayton, October
6th, and was buried Sunday, October
7th, in the Bowen cemetery.

Eliza Jane Hodges was born at In-
dianapolis, Indiana, August 21, 1840,
and moved with her parents to Lewis
where she grew to womanhood and
was married March 21, 1864, to
Michael Scharff and moved directly
to the home in which she died. Nine
children--five boys and four girls--
came to cheer scudding, darkening
clouds of despondency and gloom
that come at times to every home,
and dwo of the children preceded the
mother to the great spirit world be-
yond.

Her husband took sick last August
and surgical operation was perform-
ed, and the faithful wife seemed to
over tax her strength and the result
of her labor of love was congestion of
the brain, which ended in a stroke of
paralysis, from which she never re-
covered.

Thus has a beloved wife and mother
gone, leaving a shroud of darkness
where once was a joy and light. He
who has been her companion, for so
long, who has received the benedic-
tion of her life of love and song and
hope, whose pillow has been smooth-
ed, and the thorny track of rough
hewn road of life, been helped by her
has but the consolaiton of a sweet and
reverent remembrance.

To the children for whom no one
but a mother can care. The storm
scudded sky of youth is guided
through the treacherous shoals of
young manhood and womanhood to
the years of strong maturity. Love
beams from her eye and benevolence
from her face to chase away childish
griefs and pains and sorrows. To
their wants is given all the sacrifice,
the nobility, the purity of a life
breathi9ng the essence and purity of a
hope, a belief, a reality of life to
come. Her children have received
all this and more and with the tears
of neighbors who knew and loved,
join to wet the dark mound of earth
until mingling with the dewy tears
of earth, the sod becomes ardent with
grass and flowere while from the
land of hope beyond the loving arms
reach out to welcome all she loved.

CARD OF THANKS--We hereby de-
sire to express our manifold and
heartfeld thanks to the many kind
friends and neighbors who so gen-
erously extended us aid and comfort
during our late bereavement.

M. SCHARFF AND CHILDREN.
