Fred Scotland Found Dead
In Well Where He Was
Making Repairs

--------

Fred Scotland, well known Ham-
lin farmer was drowned Friday
morning while making repairs in
a well on his farm one mile north
of Hamlin.

Mr. Scotland entered the well
at about 10:30 a. m., and while
standing on a pipe eight feet be-
low the ground, he is believed to
have lost his balance, struck his
head and fallen unconscious into
the well.

A search was started for Mr.
Scotland by his housekeeper, Mrs.
Chris Sorensen, when he failed to
return for dinner. A neighbor
farmer, John Slayton, was called.
He went to the well, which is
located in the middle of a corn
field and found Scotland's hat
floating on the water. Slayton
summoned his son, Lona, from
Hamlin and the two men succeed-
ed in recovering the body from
5 feet of water about 4 p. m.
After an inquest at the Scotland
home, a coroner's jury reached a
verdict of "accidental drowning."

Scotland is survived by his wife,
who has been visiting relatives in
Washington, D. C., and a brother,
Walter Scotland, of near Exira.

Mr. Scotland, who would have
been 55 on September 16, was born
in Denmark and came to this
country thirty years ago. He had
lived on the farm where he met
his tragic death for the last eigh-
teen years.

Funeral services were held at 2
o'clock Monday afternoon at the
Adventist church west of Exira.
Elder Gant of Nevada officiated,
and interment was in the church
cemtery.

Note: Parents were Jens Scotland and Annie or Menne Christensen. His wife was Wilhelmena M. "Minnie" Jensen.
