George Lee Zornes Killed
When Truck Crashed In-
to Bridge During Flood

The body of George Lee Zornes,
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. George
Leffingwell of this place (Exira), who was
killed early Friday morning when
the truck he was driving crashed
into a bridge from which the ap-
proach had been washed away near
Cheyenne, Wyoming, arrived in
Exira Monday evening for burial.
Mrs. Ethel Jacobsen of Exira, who
only recently went to Cheyenne for
a visit, and his mother, Mrs. Belle
Sorns, accompanied the body here.

Zornes was enroute to Chugwat-
ter, Wyoming, with a six ton load of
freight at the time of the tragedy.
Raging waters hid the roadway
near the bridge and it is presumed
that he thought the approach was
safe as he had driven through
many places along the way where
the water was running over the
highway.

His body was found a mile and
a half downstream from where the
accident occurred and so far as
could be ascertained his death was
due to a head injury received in the
crash.

A Wheatland, Wyoming, doctor,
his wife and their son and his wife
drove off the same approach some
hours earlier and suffered injuries
from which they died a few hours
later.

George Lee Zornes was born in
Exira but left here at an early
age. He is survived by his moth-
er, Mrs. Belle Sorns of Cheyenne,
his father, Forrest Zornes, of Wat-
erloo; a daughter, Mary Jean, of
Auora, Illinois, and a brother, Ed
Zornes, of Cheyenne.

Funeral services were held Sun-
day at Cheyenne and at the Leff-
ingwell home in Exira on Tuesday
morning at 9:30. Rev. O. C. Huff
conducted the services here. Burial
was in the Exira cemetery.
