SON OF EXIRA PEOPLE
MEETS TRAGIC DEATH

---------
Lad Is Drowned When Pinned
Beneath Wagon Load of
Corn in Ditch Monday

----------

Ross Wolf, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Arley Wolf, met a tragic death Mon-
day evening when he was drowned
while pinned in a ditch under a load of
corn. Ross with his father and broth-
er, Eldon, were returning to the house
from the field. They were driving
along the edge of a ditch when the
bank gave way and the wagon toppled
into the ditch. Mr. Wolf jumped as
the wagon started to slide as also did
Eldon, but Ross was carried with the
load and was pinned above the hips
between the wheel of the wagon and
the brake shoe. The corn formed a
dam in the ditch and the water rose
until the lad could not get his head
above it. Mr. Wolf, who is recover-
ing from a recent operation, fractured
one rib and cracked another besides
receiving bad bruises on his shoulder,
in his frantic efforts to lift the wagon
from the boy's body. Neighbors fin-
nally came and helped remove the wag-
on, but Ross was then beyond human
aid having come to his death through
drowning.

Ross Curtis Wolf was the second
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arley Wolf. He
was born near Exira on September 22,
1918, and was eight years, one month
and eight days of age at the time of
his death. He is survived by his par-
ents and two brothers, Eldon and
Marion. A little sister, Esther Jean,
passed away in infancy.

Ross' short stay with us was marked
by his kind deeds and thoughts for
others. His sunny disposition and his
ready smile made him a favorite
among his playmates. The place
he leaves is as a spot in our garden
of flowers where a rare and beautiful
plant has been uprooted, to be trans-
planted in a fairer garden.

Funeral services were held at the
home at 12:30 Monday afternoon and
at the Exira Christian church at two
o'clock, Rev. Sherman B. Moore in
charge of the service. Burial was in
Exira cemetery.

The relatives who came from a dis-
tance to attend the funeral were Mr.
and Mrs. J. F. Dunahoo, Vern Duna-
hoo, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Glasgow,
Mrs. George Moore, Mrs. John Doggett
and Ralph Doggett, all of Maxwell;
Mrs. Louise Jensen of Council Bluffs,
Mrs. Roy Birney of Hancock, Mr. and
Mrs. Virgil Waterbury of Corley, Mrs.
Minnie Kelgaard of Avoca, Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Shaefer of Des Moines.

Little Ross you have left us
And our loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God who has bereft us
And He will all our sorrows heal.
Go little pilgrim to thy home
On yonder blissful shore,
We miss thee here, but soon will
come,
Where thou hast gone before.
