Former Exira Resident
Shoots Wife; Kills Self

----------

After shooting his wife through
the face and then sending a bullet
into his own brain Monday night,
Clarence McCord, 50 of Council
Bluffs, and former Exira resident,
died in a Bluffs hospital Tuesday.

Mrs. McCord is not considered bad-
ly injured unless infection devel-
ops.

The shooting culminated weeks
of drunken abuse on the part of Mc-
Cord, according to police records
and complaints. The woman says
McCord came home at 9:00 a. m.
Monday the worse off for booze
and said he would kill her if she
tried to leave the house. He burned
all the clothing owned by his wife
and little girls except that worn by
them remarking they would never
be needed again. "I guess I'll put
an end to it all" he stated. He then
grabbed a rifle and struck his wife
over the head, then shot her while
she was prostrate over a table. He
then shot himself with the only
shell left in the gun.

McCord is survived by his widow,
one daughter and one son.

Note: In the 1900 census, Clarence McCord lived in Hamlin twp., Audubon co., IA with his mother Hester Mary (Hill) McCord.
