Gerald Akers was the son of Ralph, Jr. and Ethel Parrott
Akers and died at the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital
in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 7
days.He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith. He
attended rural schools in Audubon County and graduated
from high school.After completing his education he farmed until he
enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 5, 1918. During
his tour of duty he served in the medical corps and after
being discharged he returned to farming in Audubon
County.On January 13, 1920 he was united in marriage to Hazel
Spry in Exira, Iowa. They continued farming in the area
until Hazel died on February 23, 1934.In the early 1940's he moved to Omaha, Nebraska where
he worked with the Cudahy Packing Company and later
worked as a carpenter at Offutt Air Force Base. He retired
and moved to Missouri and farmed for about 20 years then
returned to Omaha in 1981. He remained in his own home
until he entered the hospital in March of 1986.Preceding him in death in addition to his wife, was a
daughter, Evelyn Akers; his parents; his brothers and
sisters: Erma Wolf, Violet Jespersen, Earl Akers and
Vernon Akers.Survivors included his daughter, Marlene Akers and his
son, Lloyd Akers of Omaha; three grandchildren; nine great
grandchildren; three sisters: Theresa Lucas of Omaha, Leona
Smith of Hibbing, Minnesota, and Maxine Campbell of
California; two brothers: Ralph Akers, II of Greenfield,
Iowa, and Steve Campbell of California; nieces, nephews
and other relatives.
