"The Rose in My Mother's Hair"
The twilight falls o'er the plains and rills,
The birds have ceased to sing,
And o'er the shadowed earth I hear
The distant church bells ring.
I sit and muse on the distant past,
And a vision of beauty rare
Arises before my enraptured eyes
The rose in my mother's hair.
How oft in that far away happy time,
I gathered the roses red
And lovingly twined them amid the waves,
That adorned her beautiful head.
Those dark, glossy ringlets, my childhood pride,
And her face so tender and fair--
As I think of them now I can see again
The rose in my mother's hair.
And tho' she has gone to the "Land of the blest."
Her memory will ever be dear;
And the lessons she taught me in childhood's hour,
Have guided my pathway here,
And when the last roll-call shall summon me hence
To my home in those mansions fair,
I trust she will meet me with welcoming smile
And a rose in her beautiful hair.
