Audubon County Journal (IA)
Thursday, Mar. 25, 1897, pg. 2

Exira Department

The best horse that John Martin, of
Audubon township, had laid down
last Monday and died, stricken with
palsy.

Note: Parents of John William "Boone" Martin were James Henry Martin and Elizabeth Jane "Bettie" Goforth. Coincidentally, on the same day as this article in 1897, John Martin, along with 3 neighbor farmers, started on a horse drawn covered wagon trip from Audubon county to Cedaredge, CO, to work as ranch-hands. Their travels took them through "the Bluffs", across Nebraska along the Great Platte River Road, across the plains of Colorado, over the Rocky Mountains to Cedaredge, arriving on June 4, 1897. John kept a daily diary of their 1897 journey, which is in the possession of John's great-grandson, Todd Akers.
