Joab Quiel Chamberlen was a long time resident of Audubon County, having come from a pioneer family in Johnson County, Iowa.
Joab Quiel Chamberlin/Chamberlen/Chamberlain was born at Rock Island, Illinois, July 8, 1850 to John W Chamberlain and Mary Schooley.
He was the oldest brother of 6 and moved to Iowa in 1851. Joab is listed on the 1856 Census for Johnson County, and spent most of his young life in Big Grove, Johnson County, Iowa, with his brothers - John A, Albert, Daniel, Thomas, and Charles and his sister Rebecca Ellen.
Between 1870 and 1874, he moved to Audubon County. In 1874, he married Mary Jane Nelson of Sac County, Iowa. They had 6 children total, 3 of which survived to adulthood:
Roy Chamberlen of Sioux Rapids,
Ray Chamberlen of Audubon, and his daughter
Ruby Jane Chamberlen Jones of Brayton.He was preceded in death by his parents—John W., who is buried in Audubon County; Mary Schooley, buried in Wyoming with his sister, Rebecca Ellen; and Thomas Mills, buried in Kansas City, KS, and a son, Guy. He was survived by his brothers John Albert, Amos William, Daniel Webster, and Rebecca Ellen.
Mr. Chamberlin was converted to the faith when he was a young man. He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Brayton, where he was an active and faithful worker.
He was a reported witness in a trial in 1886—State vs. Henry Dugan. His daughter Ruby and her children were teachers in the area for many years. His mother, Mary Schooley, lived with him up until 1910. He was an avid farmer and gardener, and it was reported that he sold a 2.5-pound potato in July 1914.
