I happened to be at my local library where I have access to the U.S. censuses. I found the following entries, which I believe are the families of her mother and grandmother, respectively. All of this presumes her maiden name is Collins.
I previewed this posting and see the columns don't line up at all. That's the best I can do.
1860 Well Township:
Name Sex Age Race Born
Matilda Collins F 30 Mulatto Ind
Mary Collins F 13 " Mo
William Collins M 8 " IA
Phebe Collins F 6 " IA
Rebecca Collins F 1 " IANote the first girl's name for the following entry, which provides some further evidence that Mary is Matilda's mother. It's possible William was the father's name, that being a common practice in those days.
1850 Well Township
Mary Collins F 46 " VA
Matilda Collins F 20 " IA
Rueben Collins M 16 " IA
Loyd Collins M 14 " IA
Colaska Collins M 12 " Ill
Spencer Collins M 10 " MoI can't explain why the Collins name continues for the mothers for two generations.
Then here is a lengthy post in which Matilda is mentioned with lots of other Collins in Appanoose county.
