Moravia, Oct. 1, Special - The county has lost one of its best citizens by the death of Lewis Main (Sr.) at his home in this place, aged 77 years. He was born Aug. 14, 1830 in Ohio, went with his parents to Ripley county, Ind. when four years old, lived on a farm and got such an education as the schools of that day afforded. In Feb. 1851, he married Mary E. Broshar, and four years later came to Iowa, settling in Chartion township, where he lived till 1890, when he moved to Moravia. In 1862 he enlisted in the 36th Inf., served for three years, being in the battles of Little Rock, Helena, Elkins Ford and Marks Mill, where he was captured Apr. 25 1864.
He was in prison in Texas for ten months, where his principal food was corn bread and water. Finally he was exchanged, joined his regiment in Arkansas, and was mustered out at Davenport in 1865.
Death was a result of heart failure Sept. 26, 1907 , aged 77 years, 1 month and 12 days.
