Obituary

F.T. Hellyer

Froderick Thomas Hellyer, son of James and Sarah Ann Hellyer, was born in Noble county, Ohio, Sept. 4, 1852. He passed away at his home Feb. 17, 1931, at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 13 days.

When five years of age he, with his parents, moved to Appanoose county, Iowa, where they lived on year and then moved to Monroe county, where he grew to manhood.

On the 17th day of Dec. 1876, he was united in marriage to Isadora G. Funkhouser. They lived on their farm for twenty-one years, then moved to Iconium, Iowa, where he died.

When he was forty-one years of age he united with the Christian church of Iconium, under the preaching of B.W. Pettit.

He always lived a Christian life, was a faithful worker and always attended when health permitted.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his widow, one brother, E.W., one sister, Mrs. M.J. Kayson of Octavia, Neb., one half-sister, Mrs. Luther Caster of Diamond, Wyo., besides a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, three brothers and three sisters.

This little poem was prized very highly by Mr. Hellyer as he pictured his mansion the same as the one set forth in these few lines.

He is fitting up my mansion

In that land of endless day,

And I do not need another

Here where mansions fade away;

For no mansion earth can build us

But that soon or later must

Yield its strength to time and tempest,

Crumble into earth and dust;

But the mansion He had builded,

Which He's fitting up for me,

Is a place of wonderous beauty

That shall stand eternally.

The funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Feb. 19 , from the Christian church, conducted by Rev. Win R. Matsler. The Scripture reading was John 14:1-15, a favorite of the deceased. The sermon was preached from 2 Tim. 4:6, 7. This was the text which had been used for the funeral of his father and also his grandfather. Brother Hellyer was an elder in the church he loved, for many years, having been chosen an honorary elder for life about a year ago and his kindly greeting and words of counsel will be sorely missed by the congregation.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Birdie Main, Mrs. Addie Free, Mrs. Verda Argo, Perle Kelsey, Kenneth Free and Wm. Kelsey.

Internment was at the Salem Cemetery where the services were conducted by the I.O.O.F. lodge of which he had been a member for a number of years.
