Killed

On last Saturday night Nov. 17th, Thomas Fleming met a sudden death, at the depot in this city by being run over by the cars. As near as we can gather the facts, it seems there was a freight train standing on the north track (switch) and Fleming was over north of the train - about the saloon, and started to return south toward the depot and undertook to cross under the train, and while Fleming was there the train started up and he was caught and his body cut in two. He was heard to cry for help, but no one was near enough at the time to rescue him from his perilous position until too late as he was killed almost instantly. On Sunday Nov. 19th, the Coroner Jacob Shontz held and inquisition over the body and the fact, that were elicited are about as we have stated them. D. A. Spooner, C. W. Worman and R. Henderson were summoned as jurors and returned a verdict that Fleming came to his death by being crushed, while attempting to cross the track underneath a freight train about 6 P.M., Nov. 17th, 1883.

Fleming was taken to Iowa City by friends for burial.
