Obituary

Nathan Earlywine was born in Kentucky, July 14th, 1817, and in early life removed to Indiana, where he resided until he came to Iowa, in 1865. He was a member of the 6th Indiana Cavalry, in which regiment he arose to the rank of major. At the close of the war he removed to Iowa, where he resided until last summer, when at the death of his wife he went to Illinois to reside with his adopted daughter, Mrs. J. D. Carl. A year of more before going to Illinois he was attacked with softness of the brain, which necessitated his resigning his mayoralty of our city, which office he had held for many years. At the time of his leaving he was physically and mentally a mere wreck of his former self. So long as his mind was clear and his health good he took a great interest in politics, and at one time was candidate for the office of State Senator. At the time of his death, Dec. 18th, 1883, he was an inmate of the Hospital for the Insane of Organic Diseases of the Brain, having been taken care of by his adopted daughter at her home as long as it was possible to care for a man in his condition in a private family.
