Obituary

Thankful B. Putnam was born in the town of Springfield, Vermont, in 1808. She died near Moravia, Iowa, Oct. 6th, 1883.

In the year 1833, she was married to John G. Putnam. The newly married couple moved to Mountpelier, Vt., where they were engaged in farming till near the year 1868. In this year they moved to and purchased a farm three miles west of Moravia, this county. While on their farm in Vermont Mr. and Mrs. Putnam had three sons born to them, which they reared to manhood. They are noble men in society, and justly the pride of the parents. J. Abram, a successful farmer of our county, with whom and his excellent companion, father and mother Putnam have long had a pleasant home. The next son, Isaac, was first Lieutenant in the late rebellion. He served three years and was killed at the battle of the Wilderness in Va. The other son, Jacob II, is a highly esteemed and successful physician and surgeon at Rutland, Vt. While living on the farm in Vermont Mrs. Putnam joined and was a consistent and zealous member of the Universalist society. It may be truthfully said, judging by her fruits, that she was a good woman. Always gentle, kind and loving, she was loved by all who formed her acquaintance. She died as she lived - in firm belief of a blissful immortality. Among the many christian expressions of her last days is the following: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is to gain." (Phil. 1st 27.) The funeral services were conducted by the writer, and the body was lain away in Salem Chapel Cemetery. May God comfort the bereaved and feeble companion and the children. And may mother Putnam's virtues be imitated by many.
M. R. Myer,
Moravia, Iowa.
