Died

After a short but most painful illness, Mrs. Abiah Rose Earlywine, aged 68 years and 6 months.

Mrs. Earlywine was a native of Mason Co., Kentucky. When a child she removed, with her family, to Georgetown, Browne county, Ohio. It was in that place, more than fifty years ago, that she met with a radical change of heart and cast her lot with the Methodist Episcopal church. Forty-nine years ago, 1834, she there united in marriage to Nathan Earlywine. About fifteen years after her marriage she transferred her relation to the Presbyterian church. From Michigan City they removed to Centerville, Iowa, in 1863, since which time she had been a devout and faithful member of the Presbyterian church in this city, saw the church through many struggles during the past twenty-two years, and gave much labor, and offered many prayers for her spiritual and temporal prosperity. During the first few days of her last fatal sickness, she seemed to be much troubled in mind lest she should die without a clear evidence of her acceptance with God. But the clouds of doubt were at last dispelled; there was a clear shining after the rain, and she was enabled to praise the Lord almost constantly for his redeeming mercy, and his sustaining grace, and his glory revealed. And even after she was too weak to speak, the motion of her lips and the bright expression of her face showed that every waking moment was spent in prayer and praise to God. She suffered intensely at times, but God so constantly sustained her soul that she not only rose superior to the pangs of mortal agony, but died peacefully, trustingly and victoriously. Hers was triumphant death in the Lord Jesus - her blessed savior. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." "Let me die the death of the righteous, and may my last end be like his."

She has left to lament her death a husband, a loving daughter, a sister, four brothers and a long list of friends, to whom we respectfully commend the guidance and comforts of the Holy Spirit in this sad and trying hour.
