JOHN J. STONE DIED AT MYSTIC, AGED 74

One of the well-known businessman and all the soldiers of the county, John J. Stone, died at Mystic Tuesday, February 15, at 6:00 a.m., age 74 years. He was one of the prominent businessman of Mystic for many years, a member of one of the early day families, and an old soldier. He has been in failing health for some time, having suffered a paralytic stroke sometime ago from which he never fully recovered. Death came peacefully.

John J. Stone was the son of J. M. Stone, who settled in Johns township in 1859. He was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, February 4, 1842. Of the family only A. C. Stone, of Centerville, is living. The others were Mrs. Mary Powers, who died at Valparaiso, Indiana; James who died about three years ago at Plano; Aurelious, who died in the army; Mrs. Jane Curtis who died in Johns township about a year ago; Albertus who died in Kansas about 10 years ago. His wife was Ellen Cole, of Johns township who died about two years ago.

They were the parents of the following children: John M. of Mystic; Celey, of near Great Bend, Kansas; Bert, of near Waterloo; Arthur, now in California; Elzina, wife of James Buck, now deceased.

When the Civil War came on John J. Enlisted in the sixth Kansas cavalry, not finding a place open in an Iowa regiment, and being joined by a number from this section. He served with courage and loyalty, and returned to continue farming operations in Johns Township. He and his brother A. C. went into business in Plano in the store known as Stanton and Stone brothers. When Mystic was opened up he went into business there in the name of Stone continued to be prominent in business circles there, he being in partnership with his sons for many years, till his health caused his retirement. He held various positions of trust and responsibility and took much interest in G. A. R. affairs. He was a member of the Methodist church end of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Owing to the time required for his son Arthur to get back the funeral will not be till Sunday morning and burial will be at Concord cemetery.
