Two More Appanoose County Soldiers Have Given up Their Lives for Country
Two more Young troopers have been called upon to make the supreme sacrifice in the great world war, giving up their lives that democracy might win over Prussian autocracy. They were officially listed but a few days ago in the war department’s casualties list, but relatives had received Direct word some time before that. Private Scarlet was killed in action on July 19 and private Holman fell while engaged with the foe on July 20, to the best information available.

Private Clyde W. Scarlett
Clyde W. Scarlett, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Scarlett of 523 N. 12th St., Centerville, was born on June 25 1899, and died in battle in France on July 19, 1918 giving his life for his country in the world at the age of 19 years and 24 days. He leaves his parents, a sister, Mrs. Adalia English, a brother, roy, all of this city, and another brother, Pearl, who is in France with Company F, U.S. engineers.
The Scarlett's came to this city from Bentonsport, Iowa, And have won many Friends here in that length of time.Young Scarlett was especially popular with all his acquaintances of his fearlessness and his willingness to work hard to attain his ends. This spirit he lived up to in his army work as is shown in the records of his death, suffered while engaged in desperate fighting with his enemies.
Private Scarlett enlisted with the company D of Centerville on May 6, 1917 and crossed the Atlantic with that organization as part of the famous rainbow division. With which Company he was connected at the time of his death.

Last Letter Received
Just the day before his death, July 18, he wrote a letter to his parents,, and which is an especially prized by the Serling relatives as the last message from their departed soldier son and brother.
Somewhere in France, July 18, 1918
Dear mother and father:
I thought I would write you a few lines and let you know I am well and happy. I hope these few lines will find you all well.
I have been kept quite busy as our regiment has been in considerable action. While I have been quite fortunate some of my friends have been killed in action
We are now in a very beautiful country and flowers are in full bloom. And the sun shines every day. What is Pearl’s and Roy addresses? Tell them to write to me.
Well, I will close for this time, hoping to hear from you soon.
From your son,
Clyde Scarlett, Company G, 23rd infantry, American Expeditionary Force, via New York
