Centerville Citizen
Saturday August 24, 1872

Rev. G.M. Jenks, of this place, came to an untimely death last Monday evening. For several weeks past he had appeared somewhat depressed in feeling, but no one dreamed of the shocking event which ended his life. His wife, who had been out to make a call, returned to their room and found him prostrate on the floor, his right hand gasping a small pocket pistol and his head resting on a rug. She called for assistance, and on lifting him up it was found that he had been shot in the head, the ball entering above the right ear and lodging in the brain. He died about one o’clock the next morning, having been all the time unconscious. An inquest was held the next day and a verdict found that deceased came to his death by a pistol in his own hand. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved widow whose life has been blasted by this terrible event. Mr. Jenks was a fluent speaker, a man of education, and possessed of excellent native ability. Judgment, we leave to Him who knoweth the hearts of all.
