In Memoriam
Lois Fenton

"She has but wondered to an unknown land
And left us thinking how wondrous fair,
Must be that land since she is there."

Friends of Lois Fenton, whose earthly life came to a close at Downer's Grove, Illinois on November 22, 1935 must think of her as still living, for her radiant personality bespoke eternal youth. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan. P. Fenton of Independence Township, Appanoose County, Iowa, and her life began there July 10, 1908. The Township is still distinctively rural, having no railroad connections and until the"good roads era", very poor highways, yet the Brushy school District, the home of the Fentons has been the social, religious, and political center of that section for many years. Seven children grew to adulthood in the Fenton Home imbued with the principles of neighborliness, thrift, and ambition. Notwithstanding its distance of 17 miles from the county seat all seven of the children were graduated from the Centerville high school and six of them completed college courses, one of whom is a practicing physician.

Lois was the youngest daughter and favorite of the family. The many visitors to the Fenton home always recall her sunny smile, her lively wit, and friendly disposition. She completed the rural school course at Brushy and later graduated from the Centerville high school in the state teachers college at Cedar Falls. Following her graduation from this school, she taught three years successfully in the primary grades of Centerville, but wishing to broaden her experience, she secured a similar position in the schools of Downer's Grove, where she was teaching at the time her fatal illness began. Her life had been broadened by travel in her summer vacations, the past summer having been spent in California.

As a child she was a faithful member of the Brushy Sunday school and early became a member of the Brushy Baptist church, retaining this connection to the end of her life. She gave her services in teaching Sunday school classes during the school year and at times in vacation Bible schools. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Mystic, Iowa. Her parents and other members of her family were with her during the closing days of her life and to them, well expressing a desire to live, she calmly said but "I'm not afraid to die", the face of her childhood days sustaining her to the last. New line accompanying the family from Downer's Grove or attending the funeral or several friends of the school faculty and her fiancé. The services were largely attended by neighbors and friends from the local community and elsewhere. The pallbearers were for teacher friends from Centerville, and two from Downer's Grove. The sermon was preached by Rev. Dawkins of Kirksville, Missouri, pastor of the Brushy Church when she had become a member. Interment was made in the cemetery at Centerville, but, in the words of the poet,

"She is not dead, the child of our affection,
But going on to that school,
Where she no longer needs our poor protection,
And Christ, himself, doth rule."
