Centerville Citizen
Saturday, March 2, 1872

A young man named Joseph Kelly, was killed last Saturday in a sand bank about a mile and a half east of the depot. He had worked all winter cutting stone for the jail and only the Tuesday before his death commenced working for the railroad company. He was employed in excavation sand for track ballast, and at the time of the accident had worked his way too far in under without breaking off the frozen ground above. He notices the gradual giving way of the roof and endeavored to escape, but unfortunately a large mass of the frozen gravel caught and crushed him.

He lived only a few minutes, without being conscious, after being rescued. He was buried on Monday. It is said that his father lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. He came to Centerville from Oskaloosa.
