Obituary—Elisha F. Stevens
Elisha E. Stevens was born in Michigan, May 29, 1846. He was united in marriage to Denisha A. Joines, October 27, 1867. To this union were born five children. Two of these, the eldest
and the youngest preceded the father into the world beyond. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. All of the children live in and around Mystic. They are: Joel C, Mrs. Elizabeth Lowe of Brazil, and Mrs. Minnie Wakefield of this city.
Mr. Stearns was a member of Co. A 7th Iowa cavalry. He enlisted in 1862 and helped bear his flag to victory in those stormy days. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Brazil, about the year 1887, and since that time has lived a Christian life. He said in conservation with his pastor some days since: "I have no fears concerning the other world."
He died at his home in Mystic, Mch. 18, 1911, aged 64 years, 9 months, and 19 days. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Mystic and were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Charles B. Hankins. The body was laid to rest in the Philadelphia cemetery. He is gone from our midst and will long be remembered both by his many friends and by his Grand Army post, who will miss another from their ranks. His body is laid away, but his soul goes marching on.
