STAFF SERGEANT JACK E. MCCOY

JACK E. MCCOY ("serial number"), Staff Sergeant, Infantry, Company "I", 135th Infantry Regiment. For heroic achievement in action on 29 May 1944, in Italy. After being halted by heavy machine gun fire, Sgt. McCoy's platoon was ordered to execute a flanking movement under a smoke screen and an artillery preparation. After a short advance, the platoon was pinned down by their own artillery fire and one man was seriously wounded. When an aidman was wounded trying to reach this man, Sgt. McCoy crawled to the latter, and after dragging him to a position of comparative safety, treated his wounds and then evacuated him. Sgt. McCoy then returned to his platoon and after the artillery fire lifted he again led them forward. Sgt. McCoy's courage and utter disregard for his own safety saved the wounded man from certain death and reflects great credit to himself and the military service. Home address: Centerville, Iowa.
