Asenath McCleary, daughter of Isaac McCleary Sr. and Sarah Barhan McCleary, was their fifth child. The three oldest children died in infancy. She was born in Cass County Michigan, on the McCleary homestead, Feb. 12, 1834 not long after her parents migrated there from Richland County Ohio. In 1838 she accompanied her Parents, a brother John and a sister Elizabeth, to Liberty Township Jefferson County, Iowa They later homesteaded land sdjoining in Center and Fairfield Township Jefferson County, Iowa.
At the time they settled there it was wilderness, as each other time the family moved west.
They were not far from Indians each time they migrated. Before long they discovered that her uncle, Col. Benjamin Johnson McCleary Sr., had homesteaded the year before just two miles west of them. The Indians had been sent west of the Ellmaker.

Asenath was single and living at home when the 1850 census of Iowa was taken in Liberty Township, Jefferson County, Iowa. She was 16 but a mistake in the census has her listed as 14, the same as her sister Elizabeth. On December 28, 1851 she married George Clark Teater, by Hunphrey Roberts, justice of the peace in Jefferson County. It is not known by me where she and her husband lived before they moved to Appanoose County, Independance Township, Iowa, in 1853, with his family. They bought 40 acres of land on October 9, 1854, about a mile east of Griffinsville, Iowa, Griffinsville now under water by Rathbun lake.

On July 15, 1856 the Iowa State Census on Independance Township shows them farming 140 acres and listing 3 children: Sarah E., 2 years: and Isaac C., less than a year old.

The family was found at the same location in the Iowa Census of 1860, 1870, and 1885.
Eleven children are accounted for, their youngest son Clarence Erin Teater, died in a nursing home in Centerville, Iowa. He gave me all the information he could remember. He said a boy and another child died in infancy but but could not remember when they were born. They are buried in the Concord Cemetery, Johns Township near their parents, the dates on the stones cannot be read. The whereabouts of the family bible is not known to verify the dates of birth. Thefore, I will list the unnamed infants last.

Asenath and George helped raise some of the children of their oldest daughter, Sarh (Sadie) Ellen Teater Hudson. She died shortly after the birth of her sixth child.
This baby, Rena May Hudson lived only about three months after her mother died.
