Leonard F. Saewert, 89, of Lansing, Iowa, died Monday, February 6, 2006, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 9 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was in Lansing Ridge Cemetery, rural Lansing. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.
Leonard Fredrick Saewert was born March 7, 1916, in rural Lansing. His parents were Carl Herman and Lydia Charlotte (Reutkemeyer) Saewert. After attending the Churchtown School, Leonard went to work as a farm hand for neighboring farmers. From November of 1941 until October of 1945, Leonard served in the US Army as a PFC with Company C of the 25th Armed Engineer Battalion. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe and was awarded five Bronze Stars for his service. After the Army, Leonard returned to rural Lansing where he again worked for various area farmers. He was a hard worker and enjoyed both working with livestock and being in the fields.
When he wasn’t working, Leonard enjoyed most being outdoors. He loved to fish at the Mississippi River, hunt mushrooms, and trap gophers. He also liked playing cards with his friends and family.
Survivors include a brother, Milton “Mike” Saewert of Lansing; and two sisters, Mildred Hogan of Lansing and Dorothy Dahl of Skandia, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alfred and Willis.
Casketbearers were Wayne Dahl, Ronald Fink, Bill Saewert, Dean Schellhammer, Bob Kious, and Mark Reiser.
